NOTE MAKING

THE PORTRAIT OF A LADY

1.      APPEARANCE OF THE GRANDMOTHER

a.       Terribly  old about 90 years

b.      A puckered, Wrinkles running from everywhere to everywhere on the face

c.       Not pretty but beautiful.

d.      Short, fat and little spotted

e.      Slightly bent, Stooping in the back

f.        An expanse of pure white serenity.

2.      RELIGIOUS, CONCERNING TO CREATURES:

a.       Always recites and chants on the bead bag.

b.      Tries to make religious songs & prayers memorise by the author

c.       Shows concern for the village dogs by offering them stale chapattis

d.      Feeds sparrows in the city home.

e.      Used to sit in the temple reciting holy prayers and preaching to the ladies

f.        Becomes upset on knowing that there is not teaching of scriptures in the new school.

3.      INITIAL BOND OF FRNDP Betn THE GRANDMOTHER AND THE AUTHOR

a.       Always accompanied the author to the school

b.      Would prepare him for school

c.       Would make his slate ready by applying yellow plaster on to it

d.      Live together in the village.

4.      A TURNING POINT IN THEIR RELNSP

a.       When shifted to the city

b.      No more accompanying to school

c.       Disliked the subject being taught in the school

d.      Could not help him in his studies

e.      No more talk about studies

f.        No more care could be shown to the dogs due to their absence

5.      THE COMMON LINK OF FRNDP BETN THEM IS SNAPPED

a.       Author started going to Unvrty

b.      Bedroom got separated

c.       Grandmother rarely talked to him

d.      Would sit by the spinning wheel

e.      Used to feed sparrows

6.       COURAGEOUS, RESOLUTE AND DETERMINED

a.       Didn’t show her emotions when the author left for England

b.      Arranged welcome party by singing the welcome song

c.       Collected neighbourhood ladies and did Kirtan

d.      Even after requested didn’t stop singing

e.      Had warning about the nearing end of life.
